Paper-Boy is believed to depict one of four elaborate parade saddles commissioned from celebrated Hollywood saddlemaker Edward H. Bohlin by Fort Worth publisher Amon G. Carter for officials of the 1947 Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show. Contemporary records identify the four officials riding together as Fort Worth Mayor F. Edgar Deen, Stock Show vice president Ernest Allen, Stock Show president W. R. Watt, and director Sid W. Richardson. Carter instructed Bohlin to place each rider’s initials on the saddle’s silver-mounted tapaderas. The prominent letter “A” on the saddle depicted in Paper-Boy therefore suggests that it may have been made for Ernest Allen, although that ownership has not yet been conclusively documented.
